White Elephant Rules: How to Play Without Ruining Friendships
White elephant is the only holiday tradition where stealing is encouraged and grudges are part of the fun. It’s also confusing the first time you play, which is why someone always yells “Wait, can I steal that?” halfway through. Here are the white elephant rules, explained simply, plus variations and tips so your exchange runs smoothly.
What Is a White Elephant Gift Exchange?
A white elephant gift exchange is a party game where everyone brings one wrapped gift, then takes turns either opening a new gift or stealing one that’s already been opened. The goal is to end up with the best gift, or at least avoid the worst. It’s also called Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa, depending on where you live.
What You Need
- One wrapped gift per player, within an agreed budget
- Numbers on slips of paper (one per player)
- A space where everyone can see the gifts
- A referee who knows the rules (that’s you now)
Basic White Elephant Rules
- Set a budget. $20 to $30 is most common. Everyone agrees before buying.
- Wrap the gifts. No names, no hints. Mystery is the point.
- Draw numbers. Everyone draws a number to set the playing order.
- Player 1 opens a gift. They pick any wrapped gift from the pile and open it so everyone can see.
- Player 2 chooses. They can either steal Player 1’s gift or open a new one. If they steal, Player 1 opens a new wrapped gift.
- Keep going. Each player can steal any opened gift or unwrap a new one. Anyone who has a gift stolen can steal from someone else or open a new gift.
- The game ends when the last wrapped gift is opened and the final steals happen.
Stealing Rules (Where the Drama Happens)
- No immediate steal-backs. If someone steals your gift, you can’t take it right back on the same turn.
- Three-steal limit. A gift is “frozen” after it’s been stolen three times. The third owner keeps it.
- One steal per turn. A turn ends when someone opens a new gift.
- Player 1’s bonus. Because Player 1 never gets to steal, many groups let them swap with anyone at the very end.
Popular White Elephant Variations
- Dirty Santa: same rules, but gifts lean more toward gag gifts and adult humor.
- Yankee Swap: Player 1 gets a final swap at the end. This is the version most offices use.
- Dice white elephant: players roll dice to decide whether they open, steal, swap or pass. Great for big groups.
- Themed exchange: everyone brings a gift that fits a theme, like “something you’d wear” or “something under $10.”
- Virtual white elephant: use a spreadsheet or online spinner and ship gifts afterward.
How Long Does White Elephant Take?
Plan on two to three minutes per player. A group of 15 will usually take 30 to 45 minutes. For big office parties, add a timer or a steal limit to keep it moving.
Tips for a Great Exchange
- Announce the rules first. Read them out loud before anyone touches a gift.
- Encourage commentary. The reveal is the fun part. Let people react.
- Keep the budget firm. A $100 gift in a $25 game makes everyone awkward.
- Bring a gift people will actually want. Funny plus useful wins every time.
