How to Wash Graphic Tees So the Print Doesn’t Crack (A No-Nonsense Guide)

You found the perfect funny shirt. You wore it once, washed it once and now the print looks like a dried-up riverbed. That’s not bad luck, that’s bad laundry. The good news: keeping a graphic tee looking new is easy once you know the rules. Here’s how to wash graphic tees so the print, the color and the fit last.

The Quick Version

  1. Turn the shirt inside out.
  2. Wash in cold water on a gentle or normal cycle.
  3. Use a mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener.
  4. Tumble dry on low, or better, hang dry.
  5. Never iron directly on the print.

That’s 90% of it. Here’s why each step matters.

1. Turn It Inside Out

The print is the most delicate part of the shirt. In the washer, it rubs against other clothes, zippers and the drum. Turning the shirt inside out protects the design from friction, which is the number one cause of cracking and fading.

2. Wash Cold

Hot water is tough on prints and cotton. It can loosen ink, fade colors and shrink the fabric. Cold water cleans everyday tees just fine with modern detergents. Save hot washes for towels and sheets.

3. Choose a Gentle Detergent

  • Use a mild liquid detergent. Powder can leave residue that rubs against the print.
  • No bleach. Even on white shirts, bleach can yellow or weaken the print.
  • Skip fabric softener. It can coat the print and break down certain inks over time.

4. Wash With Similar Clothes

Wash graphic tees with other light fabrics. Heavy jeans, towels and anything with zippers or Velcro act like sandpaper in the wash. Separate darks and lights too, especially for the first few washes.

5. Dry Low or Hang Dry

Heat is the enemy of a graphic tee. High dryer heat can crack the print and shrink the cotton. Your best options, from best to fine:

  • Hang dry on a hanger or flat on a rack. Best for the print and the fit.
  • Tumble dry low and take it out while it’s still slightly damp.
  • Avoid high heat completely. This is how a large becomes a medium.

6. Don’t Iron the Print

If your tee needs ironing, turn it inside out and iron on low. Never put an iron directly on the design. Or just hang it in the bathroom while you shower and let the steam do the work.

How Often Should You Wash a Graphic Tee?

Wash after each wear if you’ve been sweating, but if you wore it for a few hours of sitting around, you can usually get another wear out of it. Fewer washes means a longer-lasting print. Gross? A little. Effective? Very.

How to Fix Common Problems

  • Cracked print: once a print cracks, it can’t really be repaired. Prevent it with cold washes and low heat.
  • Faded colors: usually from hot water and sun. Wash cold and dry indoors.
  • Shrinking: stop using high heat. Wash cold and hang dry to keep the fit.
  • Stains: treat them as soon as possible with a gentle stain remover, avoiding the print area.
  • Pilling: wash inside out with similar fabrics and use a fabric shaver gently on pilled areas.

How We Make Ours Last

Our tees are printed on soft, lightweight ringspun cotton (heather colors are a cotton/poly blend) using direct-to-garment printing, where the ink goes into the fabric rather than sitting on top as a thick layer. Follow the care tips above and they’ll stay soft and readable for a long time. If a shirt ever arrives misprinted, we replace it free. See our Returns & Exchanges policy.
